Description

The third series will air in October. At first she wasn’t sure she wanted to write on the show, about the dysfunctional, super-rich Roy family.

MARTIN: ...Especially as you were coming up. I mean, this was an industry just totally dominated by white men, right?

Jenny Lawson meets Nora Ephron in this joyful memoir-in-vignettes on living—and thriving—with anxiety from a multiple Emmy Award-winning comedy writer whose credits include Succession and Veep.

In a chapter titled ‘Hashtag’, she writes about a job she had, aged 25, working with a 60-year old “comedy hero” who each night would grab her in the lift and force himself upon her. When she confided in a female producer on the show, “she very pointedly turned and looked the other way… the perfect metaphor for what the whole industry did for decades.” Why would I want to write about a lot of white men who are horrible and ruining our world? But the challenge was to dig deep into their psyches, find the humanity in them and the compassion and reveal why they’re like they are.” PRITCHETT: That wasn't the deal. As I said earlier, you know, I'm kind of all about the words. And my older son couldn't speak until he was 7. So that was a real challenge to me because I just thought, I don't know how to communicate with him or help him without words. But then he kind of taught me. And that was a real revelation. And, you know, it's interesting how often words aren't enough, whether it's trying to talk to your therapist or trying to communicate with your child. There's so many other ways I now discover. When Georgia Pritchett found herself lost for words—a bit of a predicament for a comedy writer—she turned to a therapist, who suggested she try writing down some of the things that worried her. But instead of a grocery list of concerns, Georgia wrote this book.

Advance Praise

My Mess is a bit of a Life adventures in anxiety by Georgia Pritchett is an absolute HOOT!!! The written word hasn’t made me laugh out loud like this for ages – and you all know how funny words can be. A truly funny passage can be read, read again and re-read and one can be guaranteed to throw up a guffaw each time. It really gets the good hormones pulsing.
