When the ship cracks in the typhoon, we cover our heads and tell ourselves that all will resolve back to normal. Barker meanwhile had dabbled in a variety of odd jobs before pursuing writing, but by his early 20s found himself feted by TS Eliot and published by Faber and Faber. Grand Central Station has over a hundred times more readers on here than the memoir of the affair by Smart's lover George Barker.

While he basked in the glow of being a celebrated yet penniless young poet, Smart's career sat in the shadows, as she took a job in advertising to support their children. Elizabeth Smart's novella is an impressionistic "prose poem" short of conventional plot but full of striking language - a book more about feeling than action, but something of a gem nonetheless. par la suite elle fait tout pour le rencontrer (c'est à ce moment-là que le livre démarre), et puis elle vit avec le poète et sa femme, parfois elle couche avec lui, parfois elle prise de remords (pour ce que j'ai compris, car l'histoire est racontée comme un poème; difficile à suivre).By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept is a 1945 novel in prose poetry by the Canadian author Elizabeth Smart (1913–1986).

I was torn between feeling tremendous empathy for her, and wanting to reach into the book and shake her. This book is written quite beautifully - the poetic language meant that I really enjoyed actually reading it. Written in the early 1940's while Smart was in the throes of passionate obsession, it is hot without being salacious.

The things I am most curious about now aren’t the emotions that overwhelmed Smart but how she managed as a single mother in the 1940s- who looked after her children when she worked? The poetry of the work comes into stark contrast with the realities of the world they occupy as the speaker is interrogated by Arizona law enforcement, in one of the novels most compelling scenes.

A pesar de los esfuerzos de la familia de la autora para que el libro no viese la luz, en los círculos literarios de Nueva York y Londres terminó por convertirse en una obra de culto. Moby Dick fully just becomes a play at one point, poignantly allowing the reader to feel the madness of being trapped at sea for so long. Convoluted sentences, with layer upon layer of metaphor, make the book a struggle to read, and surely even in a 'prose poem' it should be possible to work out what (if anything) is going on?Esta es la historia que hay detrás de En Grand Central Station me senté y lloré –diferente de la que había imaginado al leer el título, pero igualmente conmovedora–, pero los sentimientos cobran tal intensidad en este libro que los hechos apenas tienen importancia. On the other hand (and I realize this sort of criticism is like being confronted with a particular type of animal--say a horse--and whining that I wish it were a cat), I found the book's almost entirely internal focus, its total lack of description of Smart's lover, maddening. What hand of fate placed this book in my path after I'd finished a long series of Muriel Spark books I do not know.
